Xavier School High 4's Site

HomeWELCOME!Jun 24, 2009
Thank you for visiting the official site for assignments of Xavier School High 4 students.

To make possible the continuation of academic work despite the suspension of classes, Xavier School will utilize this site to make information available to parents and students. When students come back to school, they will be held accountable for whatever has been assigned on this site.

While this setup is less than ideal, we have taken this option so that the suspension of classes will not unduly disrupt the delivery of instruction.

We ask for the patient assistance and supervision of parents, most especially parents of our younger students, to ensure assignments made available on this site are accomplished.

Take note that you need not have the site as a contact to be able to view the content. Should you have a question on an assignment, kindly post a reply to the particular entry you have a question on. Please follow this format for posting questions:

Student or Parent’s Full Name (Student’s Grade/Year/Section): Question

Take note that only replies to comments posted by the site administrator should be considered official responses.

Assignments are now complete.

Gentlemen!

Answer the following question below. Write your answers on a short bond paper. The activity will be collected by your teachers next meeting.

Angles of Elevation and Depression
Direction: Draw a diagram and show a neat and complete solution.

1.     A regular pentagon is inscribed in a circle of radius 25 inches. Find the length of the sides of the pentagon.

2.     A passenger in an airplane flying at 30,000 feet sees two towns directly to the left of the airplane. The angles of depression to the towns are 28 degrees and 55 degrees. How far apart are the towns?

3.     A plane is observed approaching your home, and you assume it is traveling at 550 miles per hour. If the angle of elevation of the plane is 16 degrees at one time, and 1 minute later the angle is 57 degrees, approximate the altitude of the plane.

4.     A spacecraft is traveling in a circular orbit 100 miles above the surface of the earth. Find the angle of depression from the spacecraft to the horizon.

"The Power of Myth" by Joseph Campell is actually a transcribed interview. It's very easy to read and will make you understand more how mythology can be relevant in our lives.

"The Hero With A Thousand Faces" by the same author actually propelled Campbell to stardom because he evaluates how mythology heroes of different countries are actually similar, hence he hypothesizes that there is such thing as a Hero Cycle which is the adventure that every great or epic hero undergo, which mirrors every ordinary human being's life.

For H4 Advanced, kindly refer to the H4 Advanced multiply group site.

For H4 Regular, kindly read the following tasks assigned to you:

1) Write your Ateneo College Application essay using this format and these guidelines:

  • short-bond paper
  • 1" margin all around
  • double spaced
  • Tahoma, font size 12
  • Staple the sheets together.
  • Observe proper indentation and grammar rules.
  • Provide a title for your essay.
  • For those whose drafts are with their teachers, reconstruct your essay.
  • You will submit your essay on July 6, Monday during English period.
  • The question for the Ateneo College Application essay involves discussing a significant experience that has defined you as a person, meaning, you have to narrate an experience that shows what type of person you are or an experience that changed you in a significant way.
  • To prepare you to write your essay, you might want to think about what your characteristics are that make you, YOU. These are characteristics that if removed from you would make you a completely different person. Then, think about why you think you have these characteristics. Try to trace these characteristics back to things that happened to you, personal stories. Afterwards, pick the one characteristic and the corresponding story that you feel shows the most about your person. (Do keep in mind, however, that this is a college application essay!)
  • It might help you to look back at your High 3 English essay, What Has Made Me, Me, the cause-effect essay. Do you remember that one? This was the sample composition you were made to read before writing your own (Of course, this isn't very appropriate for a college application essay, but hopefully, this will help you because the Ateneo application essay is a cause-effect essay.):I Can Still Hear the Laughter
  • Follow the three-part theme method of organization (Introduction, Body, and Conclusion).
  • You are suggested to use any of the following as your introductory techniques: a quote, a line from a song/movie/TV show, the discussion of a symbol.

(2) Please go through the Powerpoint presentation on the Olympians

  • You must be able to distinguish one Olympian from the other. Background knowledge on the Olympians is required in order to understand the epics Iliad and the Odyssey. The Powerpoint presentation is attached, but it is also viewable here

Good day seniors! This year, we will begin our CLE classes by examining the human person. Thus, as you stay safe during the quarantine period, we would like to ask you to engage in a simple reflection activity. Write a reflection paper and please be guided by the following guide questions:

1.    For you, what does it mean to be human? Discuss 3 characteristics that are uniquely human.
2.    Compare & contrast the characteristics you mentioned with robots depicted in popular movies (i.e. Transformers, Terminator, etc.) How have these robots shown similar or different characteristics? Share an example.
a.    Please be specific in the robot and the movie it comes from
3.    Lastly, are the characteristics enough to classify someone/something as human? Discuss your answer thoroughly.

Format:
1.    On 1-2 pages bond paper. 1.5 line spacing. Font size 11 and any read-able font. Follow the format for paperwork assigned to you (if none, then provide your name and section on the first page)
2.    Your paper will be submitted on your first CLE meeting on the week classes resume (July 6-10)

Grading:
1.    This paper is worth 15 points of your Reflection grade (under Discipline-Specific Requirements) and the break down is as follows:
a.    Discussion on the three characteristics (5 points)
b.    Discussion on how the characteristics are seen/absent in robots (5 points)
c.    Conclusion: Final thoughts on what it means to be human (5 points)
2.    Ensure that the flow of your thoughts is smooth and seamless. Avoid mentioning one point and then jumping to an unrelated one.
3.    Though grammar and spelling is not graded, please write appropriately, because if a sentence doesn’t make sense, then the depth of your reflection is lost or not evident.

To H4 Students:
You may download the application materials here.  See the attachment at the bottom of this blog (entitled XSI Beijing Docs.zip).  Note that the deadline has been pushed back by one week.  The new deadline is Friday, July 17th.

Please have your parents read the message below.

To H4 Parents:

Greetings!

Xavier is proud to announce the Xavier School International: Beijing (XSI: Beijing) program, an overseas educational experience for H4 students.  The 6-week program will take place during the 3rd quarter, tentatively from Friday, October 30 to Friday, December 11, 2009.

This program synthesizes many of the skills that students have acquired during their time at Xavier and further develops skills that have been difficult to address in the traditional classroom setting. It is designed to combine classroom work with self-guided exploration, allowing students to create their own insights about China’s development.  More specifically, XSI: Beijing will enable students to:

·       analyze the complexity of China’s development and derive insights that can be applicable to the Philippine context

·       develop Chinese language skills by conversing real-life contexts

·       strengthen teamwork, leadership, and communication skills

·       adapt to changing environments and deal with unanticipated situations

These objectives will take place in the context of student academic work.  Each academic department has created a set of learning experiences specifically for the program, which will allow students to meet Xavier’s academic requirements while examining their surroundings.  XSI: Beijing thus serves as a kind of capstone to their Xavier education and a preparation for their collegiate and professional lives.

All H4 students without academic or disciplinary status are invited to apply, and special consideration will be given to students who have not yet joined a Xavier overseas program. We are able to accommodate 70 students this year.  Students may download applications from this website.

To register, please forward your application fee of ONE THOUSAND PESOS (P 1,000.00) to the Accounting Office, and have your son submit his application documents and Official Receipt to the HS Principal’s Office not later than Friday, July 17.  Please note that the application fee is non-refundable for participants who are accepted into the program, but shall be applied to the peso charges incidental to the program (i.e. visa processing).

You can find out more about the program by e-mailing Mr. Brian Maraña, the coordinator of the program, at bcmarana@xs.edu.ph.  In your e-mail, please indicate your son’s name and section.

Thank you, and we look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely Yours,                                              Noted by:
